Kirkwood went and took it. Ferrari gave us another argument.

Arlington delivered the fight. Melbourne delivered the familiar Ferrari headache.

Kirkwood going after Palou is the kind of racing that makes all the surrounding noise shut up. There is the car we want beaten. There is our driver closing. Now do something about it.

No championship trailer required. No ominous music over a man putting on sunglasses. The stakes fit inside the gap between two cars.

That is what I wanted from March. Andretti supplied it. Ferrari, naturally, supplied a separate reason to need the weekend back.

The pass is better because the stop was ugly

At Arlington, Kirkwood lost ground in the final stops, caught Palou and took the lead at Turn 13. [2] The part I care about is that the mistake did not become the afternoon’s excuse. The race still had to be taken from the driver who makes losing it look like an administrative error.

Watching that pressure get answered on track is infinitely more satisfying than hearing afterwards that the underlying pace was encouraging. Encouraging pace is a sentence. Passing Palou is an event.

Andretti put three cars in the first four, with Power third and Ericsson fourth. Power’s first podium with his new team came after sixteen full-time seasons at Penske. [2] That makes the result delicious in a way a neutral classification cannot express. The familiar name in a different garage is producing something useful for our side. Penske can enjoy seeing how it looks from over there.

I want Kirkwood making the team harder to ignore. I want Power’s new chapter to have teeth. I want Ericsson involved enough that nobody gets to file the whole operation under one driver having a good day.

Then there is Ferrari

Leclerc took the lead at the start in Melbourne. Ferrari stayed out under the first VSC while Mercedes stopped; Russell and Antonelli eventually finished ahead of both red cars. [1]

There it is again: the moment where hope starts moving faster than the race can support. Charles at the front, the picture looking right, and then an afternoon that ends with us arguing over the opportunity instead of celebrating it.

I am not interested in pretending the counterfactual is certain. I am interested in how familiar the conversation feels. A promising beginning becomes another file in the enormous Ferrari archive of “what if.” We could pave a fucking circuit with those files.

Make the favorite respond

That is why the Arlington fight lands harder for me. Kirkwood had a problem, had the pace to attack it, and forced the decisive argument into a braking zone.

I want more weekends where our drivers make the opposition deal with them. McLaren included: Pato behind that Andretti result makes me want a response, not a reassuring explanation.

There is plenty of season left for disappointment. For a moment, somebody went after the supposedly inevitable guy and made him lose. More of that. Much more.
